ya enaṃ vetti hantāraṃ yaścainaṃ manyate hatam
ubhau tau na vijānīto nāyaṃ hanti na hanyate

Word by word

यः एनम् वेत्ति हन्तारम्one who thinks it a slayer
यः च एनम् मन्यते हतम्and one who thinks it slain
उभौ तौ न विजानीतःneither of them knows
न अयम् हन्तिit does not slay
न हन्यतेnor is it slain

Translation

ENGLISH

One who thinks this self a slayer, and one who thinks it slain, both fail to understand: it neither slays nor is slain.

Explanation

Killing and dying happen at the level of the body, not at the level of the Self. This idea appears in almost the same words in the Katha Upanishad as well, which shows that the Gita carries forward the wisdom of the Upanishads.

How this verse connects

If the slayer thinks he slays, and the slain thinks he is slain, neither of them knows; it neither slays nor is slain.Katha Upanishad 1.2.19
